8 Hair Care Mistakes You Should Avoid

by Pia Wolter on Jan 15 2026

Are you dissatisfied with your current hair care routine or would you like to optimize it a little? Your hair just won't do what you want, even though you've tried everything imaginable? Then pay close attention, because professional hair care can be quite simple, no matter what your hair type. We uncover 8 hair care mistakes and I'll tell you how to get healthy and beautiful hair and how to care for it so that it doesn't lose its shine. After all, proper care is an absolute must to get long-lasting beautiful hair.

Mistake No. 1: Washing your greasy hair too often

Did you know that washing your hair too often can create a real vicious circle? I used to wash my hair every day and wasn't even aware of the unnecessary stress I was putting my scalp through. Because constant washing dries out the hair very severely.

It also stimulates your scalp to produce more and more sebum. You're probably wondering what's so bad about that? It's simple, your hair gets greasy much faster. Therefore, only wash your hair about every two to three days. If you can, even less.

If you are currently in exactly this vicious circle, you should quickly wean your hair off frequent washing. Easier said than done, I know. Maybe you can start by: Extending your typical hair washing routine by one day. Instead of every day, you now wash your hair every other day. Give your scalp and hair a little break. They will thank you for it. Because then your hair can become greasy and sebum production usually regulates itself.

Mistake No. 2: Shampoos with silicones

Finding the right shampoo is not easy, especially not amidst this overstimulation in stores or on the internet – one product after another. Don't let that deter you, however, pay more attention to the following features when making your next purchase:

  • Mild surfactants: These are primarily there to thoroughly free your hair and scalp from oil and dirt particles. At the same time, however, surfactants can also irritate the scalp, which is why it is important to ensure that the shampoo contains mild surfactants. Extra mild surfactants clean reliably and protect your skin.
  • Without silicones and parabens: These are artificial additives that, annoyingly, accumulate on the hair surface and thus ensure that nourishing substances can no longer penetrate into the hair.

If you internalize these two principles, you're already on the safe side. Our tip if you are currently still looking for a professional hair care product that is free of silicones: Neutral shampoo/shower gel with Dead Sea salt.

Our 2in1 Shampoo for Skin and Hair is your loyal companion when it comes to the gentle cleansing of your sensitive scalp. How much product (ml) do I need to use per hair wash?

Remember: Less is more! You don't need that much product. A hazelnut-sized portion of shampoo is enough for washing your hair.

Mistake No. 3: Water that is too hot for your hair

Especially in winter, hot showers are a nice thing, but we are not doing our hair a big favor with them. Because the high water temperatures dry out the hair and make it brittle. Don't worry, that doesn't mean you have to shower with ice-cold water. Preferably wash your hair with lukewarm water. This will immensely protect your cuticle and prevent dry hair.

Mistake No. 4: Too rough handling of your hair

Do not rub your hair dry under any circumstances. Keep in mind that your hair is very sensitive when wet. When damp, it tends to break more easily. Instead of vigorously rubbing your hair dry, you should gently pat and knead it with a towel. Force is definitely out of place here.

But why is wet hair so sensitive?

The hair structure opens up and your cuticle swells like a yeast dough. In this state, your hair is vulnerable and can break much more easily with incorrect treatment.

Never style your hair when it is damp! Only use your curling iron or straightener when your hair is completely dry. And never without heat protection.

Mistake No. 5: The wrong brush

Do you own a wide-toothed comb? No? Then it's high time you did, because it's clearly useful. To protect your hair structure, you should use a comb on wet hair. So-called Leave-In Conditioners or detangling sprays also make your hair easier to comb.

Mistake No. 6: Drying with too much heat

Did you know that too high a blow-drying temperature damages your hair structure? Therefore, it's better to blow-dry your hair for a few minutes longer, but with cooler air. You should take the time to do this.

  • Air dry your hair for about 15 minutes. This closes the outer cuticle, making the hair less vulnerable.
  • Set your hairdryer to the lowest to medium temperature to dry your hair. You can set the fan speed high. Important: Maintain a distance of at least 20 cm from your head.

Note: If you have very fine hair, adjust the fan speed. It's better to turn it down a notch so that your hair doesn't get tangled so easily.

Mistake No. 7: Hairdresser visits are a rarity

Intensive hair care also includes regular visits to the hairdresser. Therefore, have your ends trimmed regularly so that your hair stays healthy and, secondly, split ends no longer have a place.

Have your trusted hairdresser cut your hair ends by one to two centimeters approximately every eight to ten weeks.

Mistake No. 8: Too many styling products

  • Make sure to use hair clips with a gentle coating or fabric cover. Because tight hair ties with metal fasteners destroy the cuticle of your hair and make it more prone to breakage.
  • Do not constantly tie your hair into a ponytail or bun, as this puts more strain on the hair roots.
