How to properly care for your 3-day beard

by Pia Wolter on Jan 15 2026

You've discovered the 3-day beard for yourself and now can't imagine any other beard style, as it has become your individual trademark? But for some unknown reason, it doesn't grow evenly, and you're not really satisfied with your current grooming routine?

Then pay close attention, because in this post, I'll reveal some simple tips and tricks that will revolutionize your beard care routine. Because grooming can be so easy.

Does my shave count as a perfect stubble beard?

Before you get grooming tips for your beard, you should first categorize it correctly to get the best possible result from the style.

Definition: 3-day beard

With a classic 3-day beard, the facial skin still shows through. The beard hair stands out sharply from the skin and has not changed its growth direction towards the chin. Additionally, it is between 0.5 and 4 mm long; when this length is reached depends entirely on your hormonal and genetic predispositions. The season also plays an important role here.

A man's beard hair typically grows 0.3 millimeters per day.

More precise guidelines for your next shave that you can use as a reference:

  • Strictly speaking, 0.5 millimeters are considered beard shadow and thus not yet a 3-day beard, so don't shave too much off.
  • The classic 3-day beard is approximately 1.5 millimeters long.
  • Because blonde hair is very light, it needs 2.5 to 3.5 millimeters to even be recognizable as a 3-day beard.
  • 5 millimeters is the absolute upper limit; anything beyond that is no longer considered a 3-day beard.

Good to know: Each of your 7,000 to 15,000 beard hairs has a different growth rhythm, which is why not all of them are equally visible.

How do I trim my hair correctly?

Basically: Due to the highly varying growth rhythm, you should trim your beard every two to three days, otherwise individual hairs, for example on the neck, will quickly stand out. It's best to set the beard trimmer to a low length (between 0.5 and 4 millimeters).

Things you'd surely wish you'd known sooner:

  1. To make the hair stand up, your beard should always be trimmed under tension. To achieve this effect, you pull the skin taut behind the beard trimmer.
  2. Never trim your beard across the grain, but always with or against the direction of growth. Otherwise, itchy hair irritations, painful inflammations, or in the worst case, hair loss can occur.

Grooming a 3-day beard

Wash your 3-day beard daily with lukewarm water, and also shave and trim it regularly to keep it in shape (the same applies to your contours). Also, moisturize your skin generously so that the beard can grow well, among other things. To keep your stubble soft, you can use beard oil, and with that, you've already optimally cared for your 3-day beard.

Mistakes you absolutely should avoid:

In addition to numerous do's, there are also some don'ts you should know to get the most out of your beard. Because your beard is probably the most striking feature on your face after your eyes. So, you should by no means trim it too short. If you are blessed with extremely fast beard growth and dark beard hairs, this aspect is irrelevant for you. However, since this is not the rule, you should approach shaving step by step. Therefore, it's better to leave it longer; if the length then doesn't suit you, you can always trim the hair a bit.

Important: Men with irregular, not-so-dense beard growth can make their facial hair appear fuller with longer hairs. You should keep this in mind if you have lighter hair.

Furthermore, you should never trim your 3-day beard when it's wet. After all, a beard trimmer is designed to cut dry hair. This is simply because it cannot pick up wet hairs as well, and they are therefore cut much more unevenly.

Note: Only wet your beard for washing; it's best to use a good beard shampoo for this. Washing removes dirt that could otherwise have damaged your trimmer. The crucial thing here is to thoroughly dry your beard before trimming.

How do I dry my beard properly?

  1. Gently dry your facial hair with a towel (rubbing is taboo).
  2. Alternatively, you can dry your hair with a hairdryer, or you can air dry it.

In addition, you shouldn't let your 3-day beard grow too long so that it doesn't look unkempt due to the different hair lengths. You also shouldn't forget to regularly touch up your contours. Remember, your hair doesn't just grow where you want it on your face, but also, for example, on your neck.

But what exactly is a contour?

Basically, the contour separates two areas. You have the area where you want the hair to be perfectly styled in the shape of a beard, and then you also have the area where there is nothing but your face to be seen.

How often should I touch up the contour?

In fact, you should touch up your contour every day. Sounds tedious and time-consuming? I'll show you how to minimize effort with the right method:

  1. Ideally, use a wet shaver. If it also has a precision blade, that would be the cherry on top.
  2. Do yourself a favor and use a good shaving gel. This way you avoid painful skin irritations.

Even for you as a man, it's essential not to neglect your skincare. Healthy and well-groomed skin is half the battle, after all. It's essentially the foundation on which your 3-day beard is built. Therefore, regularly use care products such as a cleanser, a moisturizing cream, and a good beard oil.

Good to know: Beard oil makes your beard hairs silky smooth and shiny. It also provides plenty of moisture to the skin beneath your facial hair.

Conclusion

Skincare isn't just for women; men should also take care of their faces. Whether it's a full beard or a 3-day beard, every look requires effective beard care. First, you need to grow your beard, and only then can you start with the actual care. This looks like this: thoroughly wash your beard, shave, trim, and moisturize the skin underneath. Don't forget the contours. And just like that, you've perfectly groomed your 3-day beard.
