Volume Lashes - What's Behind Them

by Pia Wolter on Jan 15 2026

Volume lashes create a particularly deep expression and are on-trend. Volume lashes, or in other words, lash extensions, are a popular way to make eyelashes look voluminous and full without having to style them daily. To achieve the desired length and volume, there are various techniques applied depending on individual needs, including the volume technique and the Russian volume technique.

What is a lash extension?

A lash extension is a cosmetic method in which natural eyelashes are filled and lengthened with one or more artificial or natural hair lashes using a special adhesive. The result is a natural-looking, dense lash line.

The most innovative method is probably the volume technique.

Volume technique

The most innovative and popular method is the volume technique. This technique refers to the number of artificial lashes attached to a single natural lash. Synthetic hairs, available in various lengths and thicknesses, are typically used for this purpose.

The 2D technique involves attaching two artificial lashes per natural lash. The 2D technique is particularly suitable for clients who prefer a more natural look or whose lashes are naturally more voluminous.

The 3D technique involves attaching three artificial lashes to a natural lash. This technique is suitable for clients who prefer a natural, full look.

The 4D technique involves attaching four or more artificial lashes to a natural lash. This technique is suitable for clients who prefer a very striking look with a lot of volume.

The Russian volume technique

The Russian volume technique is a special type of lash extension. In contrast to the traditional volume technique, which usually uses synthetic lashes, this method primarily uses real hair lashes.

The Russian volume technique is considered particularly natural and light-looking because it achieves a very voluminous and full look, yet still appears soft and natural. Since real hair lashes are lighter and more flexible than synthetic ones, they can also be better adapted to the natural lashes, leading to this natural result.

However, this technique requires more time and skill, as the many hairs must be carefully attached. It is therefore important that the lash stylist has extensive experience and skill in this technique.

In general, the Russian volume technique is suitable for clients who prefer strong volume, want it to look natural, and are willing to spend a little more time and money on the treatment.

A professional, experienced lash stylist chooses the right technique and can cater to the client's individual needs to make the desired look optimally effective.

Durability of artificial lashes

With lash extensions, full and voluminous lashes typically last between 3 and 4 weeks. However, how long the extensions actually last depends on several factors.

An important factor is maintenance.

  • Do not use oils or products containing oils. This can impair the adhesion of the extensions or dissolve the adhesive, causing the lash extensions to fall out prematurely. Use a suitable lash shampoo that will not harm your skin or your artificial lashes.
  • When washing, do not use too much and too warm water. Too much water can loosen the extensions and cause them to detach. Hot water also harms not only the skin but also your lashes. Instead, use a damp cloth.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes, especially when washing your face. Instead, gently wipe over your lashes.
  • Also avoid excessive application of make-up, especially around the eyes.
  • Do not use tweezers to remove or adjust lash extensions. This can damage the extension and cause premature shedding. It can also happen that you pull out your own natural lashes along with the extensions.
  • Avoid applying mascara. Mascara can impair the adhesion of the extensions and also cause them to fall out prematurely.
  • Go for a touch-up every 4-6 weeks to ensure the extensions are well-seated and that loose extensions can be replaced.

Another factor to consider is your own lash growth. The faster the lashes reach their length and maximum growth phase, the sooner they fall out.

The durability of the newly acquired volume therefore varies from person to person. Refreshing the artificial lashes at an individual time is therefore unavoidable.

Damaged lashes due to lash extensions

Lash extensions can be a great way to achieve full, voluminous lashes without having to style them daily. However, sometimes lashes can be damaged by the extensions.

A common cause of damaged lashes after an extension is that the extensions are too heavy and thus put a heavy strain on the natural hairs. If the extensions are not applied correctly, friction can occur, leading to breakage of the natural hair.

To avoid the heavy strain on the hairs due to an extension, you should always consult a professional stylist who pays attention to quality and provides information on aftercare.

If the lash hairs are already damaged, there are some steps you can take to get them back in shape. First, the extensions should be professionally removed and the hairs left alone for a few days to give them time to recover. Afterwards, it is recommended to use a high-quality lash serum to strengthen the lashes and moisturize them. Thorough, gentle cleaning is also essential to remove all residues of mascara and other products.

Naturally growing lashes

If your lashes are pre-damaged by previous lash extensions or you want to stimulate their growth, consider the following to promote growth:

  • Use a high-quality lash serum. High-quality lash serums can help lashes grow longer, thicker, and more voluminous when used regularly.
  • Care for your lashes: Use mild cleansers and gently remove applied eye make-up to avoid damaging the lashes. If you use mascara, make sure it is thoroughly removed to prevent clumps that can lead to breakage.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Make sure you get enough protein, vitamins A and C, and zinc, as these nutrients can promote healthy hair growth.
  • Reduce stress and get enough sleep. Stress and fatigue can inhibit hair growth.

Volume lashes are all the rage, and the desire for voluminous lashes is great.

However, one's own lash potential is often underestimated. Before you artificially lengthen your lashes and potentially damage them, first support their growth naturally with, for example, the LongLashes lash serum.
